Short Biography—A Ministerial Experience
By Ruby Chang
Our world was created in six days. There was a sequence of events. There was logic. There was order. The Lord our God is and has been the most efficient Director, Manager, and kind Leader I have ever known. I have dedicated my life to utilize this gift He has given me to manage the resources put around, and before me to reach the desired result.
UCLA gave me the opportunity to become an independent thinker and learned the means to survive in this world by utilizing knowledge that gave me an edge to reach goals. CSULA gave me the credential so people of this world would give me their attention when I have a thought. In my 20’s the primary goal was just survival. Twenty –three years thereafter I learn on the job telecommunication engineering, built circuits, built networks, and analyzed business cases that deploy multi-hundreds of million dollar projects which serve the general public. For that entire “career” in the telephone company I managed assets and human resources at the Engineering level statewide. My final three years was dedicated to building and deploying cellular telecommunication infrastructure in two States, California and Nevada. Since then, I have been a telecommunication consultants and lecturer on Project Management at University in the East Coast and at CSULA.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 “He has made everything appropriate in its time. He has also set eternity in their heart, yet so that man will not find out the work which God has done from the beginning even to the end.” came into my consciousness in my 30’s. Definitely not jive well with my technical, philosophical, and business training of this world. As a manger of resources we must plan ahead, strategize, foresee and forewarn difficulties, master the art of jumping over hurdles and scaling around obstacles to reach pre-defined goals. How then could I not know God’s plans? What does He mean when He created in me the desire to know Him, set eternity in my heart, yet NOT know the work which God has done…. Impossible! Thus the search for truth, for answer took two decades of my life.
Job 38: 4 “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth!” Finally took hold of my arrogance. After reading 100 times the book of Job in one summer at the company cafeteria, hiding the Bible so not to offend non-believers there, God’s work on me yield fruit. The questioning phase of life stopped, obedience is the key. I have then truly become a follower of Christ.
In my 40’s and 50’s, I realized something miraculous, many objectives, goals we set, results we desire in business, in projects, in relationships and in personal growth come so much easier when I finally come to realize and appreciate Christ’s leadership style and God’s purpose for humanity.
Thus, I am here to share this journey not only from the point of view of this world, that is a foundation that builds from the art of Business Administration, but to explore the minds and hearts of He who took the lead to demonstrate love, chose to die, and exploded with the power to rise again. What a magnificent Leader! What a Plan! What an execution of His plan to such perfection!
A couple of years ago while returning to my old company’s retirement function for a colleague I spotted a man name Jeff leaning against the far wall. Jeff was different than the suit and tie professional man of the 70’s and 80’s, he was always in leather jackets and pants, very smooth talking man. I was the consummate company gal spending if not 8 but 10 to 12 hours daily only to labor over the jobs to ensure the company’s interest is served. One day I had a change of mind, I have the right to read the Bible in company’s cafeteria without shame or terror. Days after that I held my Bible openly and walked to the cafeteria normally, Jeff saw me walking with determination he asked quickly who is your hero? Without hesitation I said openly and loudly, Jesus Christ! Then I went on my way.
At the retirement party, I went to see Jeff by the wall, saw that he had only one leg and one arm, and still the leather jacket draped over his shoulders. In awe, but before I could act on my emotions, Jeff’s good arm pull me to him and hugged me, he whispered into my ear, you saved me. In utter amazement he told me when his motorcycle hit a car and his limbs were in view but yet not in his reach, his mind was beginning to drift, all he could remember was that day 20+ years ago, …who is your hero? Jesus Christ! Stated assuredly and defiantly. Jeff closed his eyes lying in his blood, he called upon that name, Jesus Christ, he knew then he was saved.
I worked on projects that put millions of people in communications with each other. I handled finances that funded projects and employment. Completions of such projects on time and under budget have been the measure of success. I have achieved these goals. Yet, what I believe pleased God’s heart the most is that during my journey through what I thought as my career, my vocation was that I am Christ representative and for that moment in time, my Lord so graciously revealed to me I did represent him well. How wonderful it would be if we manage the resources as Christ’s representative!
